Chef Alfred Portale brings his heritage and passion for the cuisine and culture of Italy to his namesake, serving a contemporary Italian menu in a relaxed and convivial setting in the heart of New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood.
Ensconced in a renovated carriage house, located at 126 West 18th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue, Portale Restaurant explores the many regions of Italy, taking inspiration from the country’s seasonally driven approach to cooking. Portale's menu features dishes in five main categories: Cicchetti, Antipasti, Primi, Secondi and Contorni. You can expect an abundance of roasted vegetables, market salads, pastas and assorted grilled meats and fish. The kitchen features an in-house milling program utilizing locally farmed grains for house-made bread, polenta, and pasta. Portale’s offerings are intended to delight, restore and evoke a sense of the modern Italian flare. Our mission is to be thoughtful with everything we do, but never to be too fussy.
Designed by INC Architecture & Design, Portale appeals to a multi-generational audience with an atmosphere that is warm, inviting, and approachable. Delicately combined raw material including limed white washed reclaimed timber, bleached white oak and painted white raw brick with meticulously crafted details in refined finishes like brass, black lacquer, teal leather, mohair calacatta arabescato marble and burled walnut give the space a sleek metropolitan feel with homespun comfort.
